IMH Superstar: Ruth Johnson, RN – Emergency Department

Without the many dedicated employees that make up our IMH family, we would not be successful. Some shine as Superstars in Healthcare!

This week’s featured employee is Ruth Johnson. Ruth has been a member of the IMH family for 38 years, beginning her career in 1980. After graduating from Gilman High School, Ruth chose to be a nurse. She was hired at IMH immediately after graduating from Bloomington School of Nursing with her RN. When started at IMH, Ruth was a nurse on the Medical Surgical floor, she then moved on to become the 2nd shift House Supervisor. Needing a change of pace and more flexible hours, she moved again to the Emergency Department and that is where you will find her today. Thinking back Ruth said there weren’t many options for women in a career field, nursing was the best option for her. She didn’t know it at the time, but she would find her niche in nursing.

When Ruth is not caring for sick patients coming through the ER, she enjoys many hobbies. Ruth and her husband Chuck have been married for 38 years – with their anniversary falling just shortly after her IMH anniversary! Together, they have 4 grown children and 7 grandchildren. Though all of her children are grown and moved out, they do have their dog Bear to keep them company. In her spare time, Ruth loves reading and doing needlework, specifically crocheting and cross-stitch. Her true passion lies in sports, though. She is an avid Cubs fan but enjoys watching almost every other sport whenever she has the time. While it is not usually the most common sport to watch, Ruth and her daughter enjoy spending time together and bonding over their love of tennis.

Employees who work with Ruth commented on how dedicated she is to IMH and how knowledgeable she is in her position. She has a great sense of humor, which makes work fun. When we asked Ruth what she enjoyed about working at IMH all of these years she said, “There are too many things to list… I love the family atmosphere. Everyone cares about each other along with the patients. I love this place – It really is a great place and I can’t imagine myself anywhere else.” Ruth, we agree – it truly is a great place – made even greater having you as a part of the family.

From all of us at IMH – Thank you Ruth for your dedication and service. You are a true Superstar in Healthcare!
